What is Fluorosilicone? General Properties, Compatibility & More

Also known as FVMQ, fluorosilicone is a type of saturated rubber material. It offers good stability in extreme temperatures, similar to silicone, along with chemical resistant properties similar to fluorocarbons.

Often specified for aerospace use, fluorosilicone is a highly versatile material that can be used in a wide range of sealing applications, including outdoor applications and those that experience sunlight, ozone, and chlorinated or aromatic hydrocarbon exposure. FMVQ offers good compression set characteristics and high resistance to fuel, oil, and solvents. This material maintains these properties in temperatures from -75° to 400°F (-59° to 204°C).

Fluorosilicone is ideal for static sealing applications, but is not recommended for dynamic sealing operations, due to limited physical strength, a high coefficient of friction, and low abrasion resistance.

If fluorosilicone is not chemically compatible with your application, view our chemical compatibility chart to find the material for you need.

Popular fluorosilicone trade names include Silastic LS and FSE.

Fluorosilicone vs. Silicone

Fluorosilicone exhibits mechanical and physical characteristics very similar to silicone. Fluorosilicone offers greater fuel and oil resistance than silicone, but lower hot air resistance.
