What Are the Different Types of Filters?

Filters are constructed with open-cell or closed-cell designs. Each style offers a unique composition with specific characteristics.

Open-Cell Filters

An open-cell filter is breathable, flexible, and compressible. The open-cell structure is designed to trap contaminants while allowing air and liquids to pass through. They are soft and porous, and they maintain good sound absorption. Open-cell foam is measured in PPI (pores per inch), with lower PPI (10-30) signaling coarse filtration and higher PPI (40-100+) signaling fine filtration.

Because they are not waterproof or airtight, open-cell filters are ideal for filtration and airflow applications. Common applications include air filters (HVAC, equipment intake), dust collection systems, sound dampening (speakers, enclosures), aquarium/water filtration, and packaging and cushioning.

Closed-Cell Filters

Closed-cell filters are lightweight, compressible, and feature sealed cells, meaning air and water cannot pass through. They are soft, with good compression and recovery, and typically have a low durometer rating. Closed-cell filters are airtight and resistant to water, UV, ozone, and weather. While specific temperature tolerances vary by custom design and material, these filters operate within an average temperature range of -80°F to +400°F.

Closed-cell filters are specifically designed for sealing, with common applications including environmental seals and gaskets, enclosures/NEMA seals, outdoor electrical cabinets, lighting and LED enclosures, automotive and aerospace sealing, and FDA-grade food and beverage equipment.
